Pillows For Peace Artist Statement

The dictionary defines a pillow as: "A cloth case, stuffed with something soft, such as down, feathers, or foam rubber, used to cushion the head". The last part of this definition is what inspired me to use pillows in this project. Pillows carry a metaphor for relaxation, comfort, dreaming, and thinking. I contrast this metaphor with many contemporary worldwide issues. If we only relax, think, and dream about other possibilities, we could come up with a peaceful alternative to war. I chose war because it has always been a part of barbaric human behavior, and as we all well know continues even in current day situations. I have encouraged people to send pillows and messages of peace to form one united message. Here, everything that people have ever associated with a pillow (soft, resting, tired) now enters into their associations of war. The peaceful writings help to further break down this bunker, a most common war structure, creating a stronger message of peace.
