REQUIREMENT FOR EACH PROJECT

  1. Digital Files: Name Convention Format

  2. Each period of class project, students must bring all the work progress to every class section until the due date.
  3. The final output on all projects will be on CD/DVD disc depending on the size of all the digital files.
  4. You are required to update your artworks on your digital arts student portfolio during this semester.
  5. The prints on each project

Project 1: Three artwork of Photomontage: The Kinematic

Research

  • You must write a paragraph and post images of artworks on one contemporary artist working with the momentary concept in his/her art.
  • You will post the image and written words on class Facebook group by Jan. 20.

Project Overview:

  • Students will be required to submit one print in a standard medium size format, 17"x 22". You image for print must be Tiff format. Please see print requirement
  • The final print must have have about a 1 inch border on all sides. Also your photomontage must be uploaded to the class homework folder before class begins in digital form as a Jpeg .
  • Mandatory critique is to immediately follow during class.
  • You must take you photograph in high quality, a minimum of 6 Megapixels.

Create sequent images that capture a momentary to exploit a narrative or action sequences into a single photomontage. I would like you to focus on shooting and photoshoping your own photographs.

Objectives:

  • To develop technical skills in digital camera and basic photography
  • To develop technical skills in Photoshop
  • To develop conceptual skills and ideas.
  • To push students to discuss their work as it is impacted and restricted by the tools being used.
  • To push students to interpret and express personal interests as a conceptual base in their work.

Methodology:

Influence by David Hockey, Students will create a panel of photo montage that are sorts of narrative movement. The entire sequence implies a sense of fraction of a story. By "imply", it means that the fraction can loosely lead or can be referencing other known stories or events, or it can elicit a feeling of things that may or may not happen next. It can also be surreal and can be imaginative contents.

Concept

The keys to create a sense of kinematic and movement in still image

  1. The Visual Flow
    • Eye movement, majority people are right handed, so many cultures read from left to right. So starting visual should move to one direction, just keep it simple for now. Horizontal is more easy to read than vertical movement, as human eyes are align on horizontal line.

     

    • The Rhythm: the flow of visual elements in repeatable forms or patterns
      • Legato (Tied together) means a smooth transition along the similar subject or action

Important Notes:

For this project, you MUST use only your personal imagery. This means you will need to use the cameras in the PIP Lab and the scanners and wacom tablets.

  • Has the student completed the assignment in its entirety?
  • Has the student generated a clear and compelling concept?
  • Has the student resolved all compositional concerns?
  • Is the project executed with technical precision? Are edges of objects blended appropriately?
  • Is there a level of complexity attained which reflects the required time investment?

Project 2: Self Portrait: The Identity

NOTE:

Key to successful combine different sources of images:

  • To match the light and shadow direction.
  • To match perspective and camera lens.
  • To match color temperature.
  • To match color hues and saturation
  • To match pixel resolution.
  • To match reflection.
  • To match white balance.
  • Good blending the edges.

 

Research Due

Base on some example, students will follow upon the idea given and finding artist(s) who work on portraiture and presenting to the class. Please don't use what I already have as image samples on this page. Accompany with images of example, biography, and write down some note analyzing the idea and techniques of your researched artists, presenting to the class.

Images must be placed in the designated server folder (I will instruct you where to put it) before the start of class. Mandatory critique is to immediately follow during class.

Final Print ( a week after critique)

Turn in a print form as an Luster Photo print (LPP) no smaller than 11x17 inches, printed at the Premiere Imaging Print Lab (PIP). Critique is to immediately follow to discuss print and resolution quality.

Project Overview:

Create a self-portrait that demonstrates your ability to creatively express facets of yourself in a compelling visual form.

Objectives:

  • To further develop technical skills in Photoshop.
  • To further develop conceptual skills and ideas.
  • To push students to interpret and express personal interests as a conceptual base in their work.

Methodology:

As an inner self-portrait, you will demonstrate your ability to creatively express facets of yourself in a compelling visual form. This is a modern interpretation of the self-portrait in that you will not include any full body imagery of yourself. Think of this project as a visual poem of your personality or life.

You will create your self-portrait in the form of a photo montage or photo collage. I think of a photo collage as an assemblage of pieces and parts combined in such a manner as they still appear as separate pieces. A photo montage is also an assemblage of pieces and parts combined, but the emphasis is to combine all the elements into a relatively seamless image.

Important Notes:

You must use your own imagery for this project, or use royalty-free stock images from the providers covered in class. Consider that you will need to use high quality photos for final print output; no image should be rescaled to a larger size. If you are unable to find a stock image of what you are looking for, consider using your own photo or painting it using Photoshop brushes. Do NOT use googled web images or scanned copyrighted images! You do not have legal rights to use them for your artworks, and will receive an F on the project.

You must take you photograph in high quality, a minimum of 6 Megapixels.

I am giving you a great deal of latitude in interpreting your self-portrait. Technically, I want you to demonstrate an understanding of various techniques learned in the class, as well as using some combinations of your own.

The combining of imagery will be done through Photoshop tools using layers, selections, masking, filters, blending modes, adjustments, etc.

Scanners are available in the Mac Lab and Print Lab upstairs. Some digital still cameras can be checked out at the ARC (Art Resource Center). I encourage you to take risks with this assignment. Use this class as an opportunity to produce imagery unlike any you have created previously. Embrace your creativity and produce work that you are proud of.

Make sure that you create an artwork that is not too literal! For instance, if you define your personality by playing video games, don’t just throw a bunch of characters together and call it a self-portrait! Instead, think about how you can depict your fascination with video games in a different way:

  • How does a particular game affect your life?
  • Do you play for 8 hours a week?
  • How do you show that?
  • Do you not clean your room because you are busy playing?
  • How do you express that in a way that is visually interesting?
  • How do you express it in a way that others, including people who aren’t into video games, can find it intriguing and approachable?

This is the challenge for the assignment. Really think deep about the things, beliefs, motives, perceptions, and values that define you.

How do you relate to the world you live in? I am looking for you to think deep for this project.
(DO NOT USE THIS VIDEO GAME EXAMPLE!)

Constraints:

  • Avoid literal translations of things that you simply like. This piece is about the definition of your soul as a human being.
  • This is a photo based project. You can use photographs, scans, and digital painting work within
  • Photoshop.
  • You are not to use full frontal or full face (portrait-type) images of yourself. However, you can use detail images of yourself such as an eye, hand, foot, etc. Consider using detail images of yourself to emphasis conceptual meaning.

Technical Requirements:

Part 1: Research

  • Select 3 of the artists listed at the bottom of the rubric to research. You can also select other fine artists creating self-portrait work, as long as they are legitimate and established artists.
  • Write a paragraph for each artist describing conceptually what the artist is trying to accomplish visually. How do you relate to these artists? Be thorough in your writings. I will come around the class during lab time on this day to check your sketchbook entries. Do not overlook this part of the project. Researching is the most important part in getting your creative juices moving.
  • Draw 3 possible proposals in your sketchbook for what you would like to develop in Photoshop

Part 2: Final Image in JPEG format (due date can be seen on class schedule)

  • Begin a NEW psd document which is 11 x 17 inches with a resolution of 300ppi.
  • Within the folder titled "Project 2" on our class server, create a folder labeled with your BGSU ID (e.g. saritds). Inside this folder, put your working Photoshop document in this folder labeled yourName_project2.psd. Also included a folder titled "Resources." This is a retainer for all your working files.
  • Save to the server often. Back up to your flash drive often. Corrupted files won't be accepted as an excuse for a missing project!

Part 3: Final Print DUE:

  • Revisions should be made to your project and then printed in the Print Lab. Your image should be at least 11x17 at 300 ppi or larger if possible. Your final project grade will be based on this print and subsequent improvements made over the original final image.

Project 3: Transformation

  • Digital Image DUE: Apr. 30th
  • Print DUE: May 7th


Methodology:

You will create a series of three images as a choheive body of work. All they should be in the same theme. You will use a word as a starting concept on each image. Than student will create a narrative composition visually expresses your personal interest in the content.

List of words for consideration: change, alteration, mutation, conversion, metamorphosis, transfiguration, transmutation, sea change; revolution, overhaul; remodeling, reshaping, redoing, reconstruction, rebuilding, reorganization, rearrangement, reworking, renewal, revamp, remaking, remake; informaltransmogrification, morphing a metamorphosis during the life cycle of an animal.

Procedule:

  • Research Due on April 26
  • Sketches Due on April 31
  • You must get started on your first image immediately by Apr. 2nd.
  • There will be a progress report two weeks after the assignment is given. At this time, you should upload to the class server versions of your project to discuss with the professor. I don't want to see images you WILL be working with, but your own psd files that are expressing the direction you intend to take. Consider this a per-critique.
  • Final Images in PSD and JPEG format: This series is due in digital form as a PSD and they must be placed in the designated server folder (I will instruct you were to put it) before class. Mandatory critique is to immediately follow during class.
  • Final Prints: Due by May, Thursday 7th (3) THREE prints of no smaller than 12 x 12 inches each print from MCap lab.
  • Upload images to canvas for grading


Objectives:

  • To further develop technical skills in Photoshop
  • To further develop conceptual skills and ideas.

You can use any imaging means to create the artwork: digital painting, photo manipulation, scanning, etc.
