Reading Responses

Description:
Write a multi-paragraph response to each article.

Technical Requirements:
  • Each essay must be no less than two paragraphs of four sentences each.
  • The first paragraph should summarize the primary points of the article. This might require you to write a longer paragrah.
  • The second paragraph should include any insights or thoughts you had in response to the content of the writing. DO NOT comment on your feelings about how it was written, but the material covered.
  • All documents must be turned into the homework folder for this course before the beginning of class.

Project 1: The Inner Self Portrait

Research
Create three completed drawings to demonstrate your composition ideas for project 1. Write 3 paragraphs describing the techniques used by your researched artists.

Final Image in JPEG format
Due in digital form as a jpeg. Image must be placed in the designated server folder (I will instruct you were to put it) before the start of class. Mandatory critique is to immediately follow during class.

Final Print
Due at beginning of class in print form as an Luster Photo print (LPP) no smaller than 11x14 inches, printed at the Premiere Imaging Print Lab (PIP). Critique is to immediately follow to discuss print and resolution quality.

Overview:
Create a self-portrait that demonstrates your ability to creatively express facets of yourself in a compelling visual form.

Objectives: Methodology:
As an inner self-portrait, you will demonstrate your ability to creatively express facets of yourself in a compelling visual form. This is a modern interpretation of the self-portrait in that you will not include any full body imagery of yourself. Think of this project as a visual poem of your personality or life.
You will create your self-portrait in the form of a photo montage or photo collage. I think of a photo collage as an assemblage of pieces and parts combined in such a manner as they still appear as separate pieces. A photo montage is also an assemblage of pieces and parts combined, but the emphasis is to combine all the elements into a relatively seamless image.

Photo Collage: Photo Montage: Important Notes:
You must use your own imagery for this project, or use royalty-free stock images from the providers covered in class. Consider that you will need to use high quality photos for final print output; no image should be rescaled to a larger size. If you are unable to find a stock image of what you are looking for, consider painting it using Photoshop brushes. Do NOT use googled web images! You do not have legal rights to use them for your artworks.

I am giving you a great deal of latitude in interpreting your self-portrait. Technically, I want you to demonstrate an understanding of various techniques learned in the class, as well as using some combinations of your own.

The combining of imagery will be done through Photoshop tools using layers, selections, masking, filters, blending modes, adjustments, etc.

Scanners are available in the Mac Lab and Print Lab upstairs. Some digital still cameras can be checked out at the ARC (Art Resource Center). I encourage you to take risks with this assignment. Use this class as an opportunity to produce imagery unlike any you have created previously. Embrace your creativity and produce work that you are proud of.

Make sure that you create an artwork that is not too literal!
For instance, if you define your personality by playing video games, don’t just throw a bunch of characters together and call it a self-portrait!

Instead, think about how you can depict your fascination with video games in a different way:

  • How does a particular game affect your life?
  • Do you play for 8 hours a week?
  • How do you show that?
  • Do you not clean your room because you are busy playing?
  • How do you express that in a way that is visually interesting?
  • How do you express it in a way that others, including people who aren’t into video games, can find it intriguing and approachable?

This is the challenge for the assignment. Really think deep about the things, beliefs, motives, perceptions, and values that define you.

How do you relate to the world you live in? I am looking for you to think deep for this project.
(DO NOT USE THIS VIDEO GAME EXAMPLE!)

Constraints: Technical Requirements:
Part 1: Research
Part 2: Final Image in JPEG format (due date can be seen on class schedule)

Project 2: Modular visuals

Research
You must write a paragraph about one contemporary artist from this list and a paragraph about an artist from this list of new media artists. Select their name and then research about their work. In your paragraph, you should explain their work, their themes and how they executed their themes through a specific medium.

Finished Images in JPEG format
You will be required to create three (3) finished versions of this project. See class schedule for due dates. Each is due in digital form as a jpeg uploaded to the class homework folder before class begins. Mandatory critique is to immediately follow during class.

Final Prints
Due at beginning of class in print form as an print on paper of your choice. The finished print should be presented as a uniform triptych on a single shee of paper with a width dimension of 39 inches, printed at PIP lab. Critique is to immediately follow to discuss print and resolution quality, following the rubric listed below.

Overview:
Create an image which demonstrates the unique characteristics of digital art making --> focusing on those which show database behavior or virtual world generation.

Objectives: Methodology:
The nature of the medium of digital art is to work within databases of information. As discussed in class, these complex matrices -- built from arrays -- give form and behavior to visual images generated through the computer. For this project, you are to determine several simple building block modules and generate a complex narrative visual from these modules.

Modules are simple building blocks of abstract information which can be used to make something complex. Think of how atoms in your body come from simple sources, yet generate something marvelously complicated. Legos are simple objects but -- with enough of them -- you could build planets. The narrative story can be of personal belief, observation, or reaction to the many options above. Consider a beginning, middle, and end for your three images, but make sure that all three images make sense together and play a special role of their own within the triptych. Conceptually, I want you to think deep and exercise your brain.

You must use digital painting, photos, and scans to complete this assignment. However, you cannot complete the whole assignment only using one of the three. You MUST use scanning and alterations of those scans THROUGHOUT all your works.

I encourage you to take risks with this assignment. Use this project as an opportunity to produce imagery unlike any you have created previously. Embrace your creativity and produce work that you are proud of.

Important Notes:
For this project, you MUST use only your personal imagery. This means you will need to use the cameras in the PIP Lab and the scanners and wacom tablets.

Project 3: Transforming Your Sensations Digtial Due April 26th/ Print Due by May 3rd

Research
Entries need to be complete in your sketchbook. These MUST be full scale drawings, not SKETCHES. I will check these.

3 Final Images in PSD format
This series is due in digital form as a PSD. Images must be placed in the designated server folder (I will instruct you were to put it) before class. Mandatory critique is to immediately follow during class.

Final Print
Due at beginning of class Pick the best image and print ONE on HGE paper no smaller than 18 x 24 inches, printed at PIP lab. This print should be turned into my office on DEC 12th before 5pm.

Overview:
Using the given sensations, design and create an abstract composition that visually expresses your personal “synesthesia.”

Objectives: Methodology:
Synesthesia: Synesthesia is a human mental condition that effects only a certain number of people, called Synesthetes. These people associate color to letters and numbers automatically through cognitive means. In art, variances of music also play a role of color association.

This project will be meant to evoke synesthetic associations. Whether you are a Synesthete or not, this project will take creative understanding of your associations with the given sensations. Really think deep about how you can abstractly describe these sensations.

Important Notes:

I have given you three different sensations. You will create artworks from two of them, but it is up to you which ones you prefer to use. The thee sensations you can choose from are:

  • -Night Sensations
  • -Hospital Smells
  • -Sea Sounds

Use your mind and senses to construct abstract representations to describe the sensations that you decided to choose. You will learn to visualize ways in which the representations interact compositionally within the picture plane, which should be consistent with how the sensations might actually be experienced in the real world. You will also use texture, shape, and color to better describe your understanding of your chosen sensations.

You can use any imaging means to create the artwork: digital painting, photo manipulation, scanning, etc. However, keep in mind that you are NOT to use images of objects to literally represent the sensations. This project should be an abstract interpretation of how you are translating your senses while thinking about the given sensations.

Really dissect the sensations you have chosen. Think about texture, color, composition, shape, perspective, edge shape, etc. This will force you to really analyze the translations between your senses.

Example of what I DON’T WANT: (Selected the Sea Sounds sensation) A seagull eating a fish on the seaside. This is NOT a deep analysis of what the Sea Sounds sensation means.
