Summary

Create 5-8 images, four prints, and one contact sheet
In this assignment you will use an advanced camera and digital manipulation (if you want) to make a body of work that is a fabrication and plays with the idea of photographic truth.

You are required to use one of the higher end cameras available for checkout

Canon-EOS-5D
Canon-EOS-5D MarkII
Canon-EOS-10D

or use a camera similar in caliber. I will cover checkout details in class, but they are posted below.

Objectives

To learn the technical idiosyncrasies of advanced photography.
To grasp the nature of image making with high end digital cameras.
To continue the process of understanding good digital prints.
To analyze and make artistic comments on photographic truth.
To learn the power of influence that photographic images have on viewers.
To learn to manipulate the image; by framing, lighting, image capture manipulation or by digital alteration in order to construct something believable, even if not true.

Methodology

Use a high end digital camera and Photoshop to fabricate an environment, situation, or object. Think about the truth (or the lack thereof) that the camera portrays and make a seamless image that forces us to confront the truth of images. You can construct the pictures when you take the photograph, you can manipulate them in Photoshop, or you can use a combination of both. The content can be very broad, so long as you are fabricating and playing with the notion of truth and the images work together as a body of images.

With the digital revolution we can take quick photographs and get fast feedback, thus image making is less rigid and objective and now more flexible and subjective. How we make the image is now less important than what the image is about.

Review the artists covered in class:

Very similar to Oscar Gustave Rejlander

Catherine Chalmers
Matt Siber
Sebastian Lemm
Tim Davis
Ellen Jantzen
Oliver Wasow
Nancy Burson, especially her early composites
Keith Cottingham
Viktor Koen

These artists influence us by the what they put in the frame and how they work with the camera. They construct a history, story or influence our beliefs (some political) about things.

Create a contact sheet (full sheet) using Bridge as covered in class. Printout due Sep 24th.
For yourself, backup your work using a file structure and reference contact sheets as you did in your first assignment. I will not collect this, it is for your own reference.

Constraints

You will create a contact sheet from the images that you shot for this assignment. Bring a color printout to class on Sep 24th.

You are required to use one of the higher end cameras (Canon-EOS-5D, Canon-EOS-5D Mark II or Canon-EOS-10D) or use a camera similar in caliber.

Make a cohesive body of work that is five to eight images that go together in some way.

Print your four best images using the MCaP.

Submission Requirements

Create a folder with your last name on it in the Assignment 2 folder:
Classes->ARTC4250_001->Assignment 2-> Your Name

Put your contact sheet in this folder.

Put all five to eight images in this folder.
Images should be 5MB or smaller (turn-in version only) and be jpeg.

Bring prints to class on Oct 8th.

Grading

You will be graded on your ability to complete all parts of the assignment.

You will be graded on concept, formal qualities (composition, color, etc.), following directions, completing all parts of the assignment and technical mastery.

See the canvas shell for how this assignment is weighted relative to your final class grade.

Please note

Ask any questions in class or contact me by email or stop by office hours to clarify any questions you have about the assignment.
