Week 1

8/21 tue           Intro to Digital Imaging: Introductions, syllabus, course site, using class server. Project 1 presented in class.

Assign Reading Response 1 (pp.43-66) Create Class Blog (all research and response writing will be uploaded here) 

8/23 thu          Lecture/discussion: Digital Imaging, Using tools unique to digital media in the creation of art. Photo-manipulation/Juxtaposition. Introduction to Photoshop

 Assign Sketchbook Entry-mockup of project 1 (minimum of 5 drawings) I'm not looking for detailed drawings. Rough sketches only, however work will be graded on concept and presentation.  You do not have to be great at drawing, I only want to see that your ideas are flowing and you can successfully communicate those ideas to others.

Week 2

8/28 tue           Demonstration: Photoshop navigation, photo-manipulation demonstration. Students will follow along with materials provided in class as practical uses of these basic tools in photo-manipulation are demonstrated.

Reading Response 2 assigned.

DUE TUE. 8/28: Students must turn in physical sketch books, they will be returned on next class day.

8/30 thu          Demonstration: Photoshop preferences, working non-destructively. Students will follow along with materials provided in class as essentials of color correction and composting are demonstrated. 

Assign digital mockup of project 1(minimum of 2 versions) I would like to see you putting what has been demonstrated in practice. You must have a clear direction in which you are heading for your final version. Works in progress will be presented in class (9/6 thu) for critique.      

DUE THU. 8/30: Reading Response 2 should be uploaded before class. Reading Response 2 can be found: [HERE], Assignment requirements are [HERE]. Project 1 research papers and drawings are due.


Week 3

9/4 tue             Lecture/discussion: Applying Design fundamentals to digital art/creating a “successful image”.

9/6 thu             Project 1 Work in Progress Critique


Week 4

9/11 tue           Lecture/Demonstration: Cannon Camera, Raw Format, Image size, resolution and resizing.        

9/13 thu           Project 1 class work time, be prepared and have your final draft of Project 1 developed enough to get feedback from the instructor.


Week 5

9/18 tue           Project 1 Final Critique      

DUE TUE 9/18: Project 1 completed and uploaded to server and printed from print lab. Be ready to defend your ideas in an intelligent way, using terminology discussed in class.

9/20 thu           Lecture/Demonstration: Digital Painting, painting a sphere and cube, digital painting workflow, custom brushes. Project 2 presented in class.

 Assign Sketchbook Entry-mockup of project 2 (minimum of 5 drawings)


Week 6

9/25 tue           Demonstration: Scanners, painting from traditional to digital, drawing in photoshop, liquify, from greyscale to color. Trouble with color? Using photographs as color palette

Video Response 1 assigned.

DUE TUE. 9/25: Students must turn in physical sketch books, they will be returned on next class day.

9/27 thu           Lecture/Demonstration: Contemporary digital fine art/production art, Digital painting (the photo collage method)

DUE THU. 9/27: Video Response 1 should be uploaded before class.


Week 7           

10/2 thu           In class project: Digital painting still life. Reference image can be found [HERE]
Project due at end of class. Must be uploaded to class folder.     

 Reading Response 3 assigned.    

10/4 thu-off    


Week 8

10/9 tue           Project 2 Work in Progress Critique

DUE TUE 10/9: Digital mockup of project 2 should be uploaded before class. Requirements can be found:[HERE]

10/11 thu         Lecture/Demonstration: Digital replicating tradition. Intro to painter.


Week 9

10/16  tue             Project 2 Final Critique 

DUE TUE 10/16: Project 2 completed and uploaded to server and printed from print lab. Be ready to defend your ideas in an intelligent way, using terminology discussed in class.

10/18 thu           Demonstration: Corel Painter navigation, setting up canvas, brushes


Week 10

10/23 tue           Lecture: Digital Disconnect. Project 3 presented in class

10/25 thu           Demonstration: Digital painting/ the figure demonstration, in-class project painting the body subtlety in forms

 Assign Sketchbook Entry-mockup of project 3 (minimum of 10 drawings)


Week 11

10/30 tue           Demonstration: High Dynamic Range (HDR), standard aspect ratios

DUE TUE. 10/30: Students must turn in physical sketch books, they will be returned on next class day.

11/1 thu          Demonstration: 3D Anaglyph, Stereoscopic 3D effect.

Week 12

11/6 tue          Project 3 in class Proposal

DUE TUE. 11/6: Students must present a formal proposal of project 3 to the class in order for their classmastes and instructer to better understand there direct when it comes time for crituqe.

11/8 thu          Project 3 in class work day.


Week 13

11/13 tue           Project 3 Work in Progress Critique

DUE TUE 11/13: Digital mockup of project 3 should be uploaded before class.

11/15 thu          Demonstration: Painting with pictures. Photoshop custom brushes and collaging continued.


Week 14

11/20 tue          Project 3 in class work day.

11/22-off Thanksgiving!!!!!!!


Week 15

11/27  tue             Project 3 Final Critique 1(Not printed)

DUE TUE 11/27: Project 3 completed and uploaded to server. Be ready to defend your ideas in an intelligent way, using terminology discussed in class.

11/29 thu          Project 3 in class work day. Make *FINAL* revisions before print.


Week 16

12/4 tue          Demonstration: Web Portfolios

12/6  Project 3 Final Critique 2

Finals Week
