DIRECTIONS:

The class will be doing a collaborative project that utilizes JavaScript and HTML. The theme of the project is Surveillance. The concept is dealing with the theme of surveillance and what it means in relationship to individuals and the society today and in the future. Using the readings as a basis for discussion, we will explore the theme in an artistic/expressive fashion. Since surveillance and awareness of its presence in the world impacts how individuals act, it is expected that you will take risks in your selection of images and development of the interaction (heirarchy and use of hypertext / linking). The project will be broken up into separate parts:
  1. A main page for the whole class will display a creative image with navigation to the 4 specific sections.
  2. A main page for each sub-theme will then link directly to the students pieces in that group.
    - You must design this main page (and a back to main button) as a group
  3. Individual projects - You must have a main page for your site that also has a button to return to the main page of your group theme. You must have a way to return to your first page from other pages in your site, so that viewers can navigate between the sites.

The Process:

On Wednesday, February 18,we will discuss the readings and brainstorm the possible concepts. Each student must come PREPARED with their assigned reading. SEE ABOVE. Based on that brainstorming session, we will then divide the results up into four sub-groups. Each student will then chose a sub-group to work within. There is a minimum of 3 and maximum of 4 students in each group.

Deadlines

Wednesday, February 18: Readings #2 due

Monday, February 23: Research and Proposal due
You must do individual research on the web (in addition to the readings I've already given you) and write a proposal for your piece. We will then divide the class into four sub-groups, grouping people with similar topics together.

RESEARCH: This must include At least 3 links to informational websites that assist in the content of the piece and/or imagery that you've gathered for potential inclusion in the piece. You must have a method of presenting this research to the group (i.e. HTML page with the links, print outs, bookmarks, etc.) You must compile these URLS and email the links and a title for each, to me. I will then put these links on our class website.

PROPOSAL:Type up a proposal for your project. Include a description of the imagery and/or sound. Describe the concept (what this is an exploration of, what you are expressing) in paragraph form. Your concept should be clearly expressed. BE SURE TO USE PROPER GRAMMAR AND CHECK SPELLING! You will present your idea to your classmates and discuss it in depth with your group. Email me your proposal prior to start of class or bring a hard copy with you.

Wednesday, February 25; Group Work Time
You will meet with your group and confirm and expand on your ideas. You should think of how you want to unify your works, and what type of Main page will allow the most freedom of expression. Consider setting parameters such as color palette, size, or font usage to make the pages unified.

Monday, March 1: Heirarchy Chart due
Turn in a professional, neatly designed heirarchial chart outlining your art site structure. Be sure to show all of the different possible paths within your piece. This must be clear and clean.

MONDAY, March 15: Project Due!
Your individual piece as well as the group link page must be completed by start of class for critique!


REQUIREMENTS

Your individual piece: You will design your own website using the criteria agreed upon with your group. Your page can use text and still or moving (video) images to poetically express ideas and concepts related to your selected topic. You will use JavaScript to either animate or switch images (or do some other creative thing). You may use imagemaps, animated gifs, or any other aspect of HTML we have learned so far. You may choose to include video (edited, streamed, or via web cam). Be creative and expressive with your images and text. Think about the cultural and social aspects of surveillance. Think of what it means to you. Think of a one or two word phrase to describe your section (the title for your piece).
