Research Assignment #1:

Art Portfolios and Artistic Concepts on the World Wide Web

DUE: WEDNESDAY, January 21

Email Me the completed assignment prior to start of class.

MUST BE TYPED, PROFESSIONALLY WRITTEN, EDITED, SPELL / GRAMMAR CHECKED, ETC.

This assignment is in TWO parts. You must complete both.

Part 1: GOOD ARTIST PORTFOLIO

"It is debatable when exactly the history of digital art began. Artists have been experimenting with computers at least since the 1970's... As in the evolution of photography and video art, this new medium was often considered a threat to traditional art forms... Over the decades, art making use of digital technologies has taken many forms, and even today, the question of how exactly digital or new media art can be defined is still being debated."

Christiane Paul, New Media Curator
Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
LINKS TO ARTIST PORTFOLIOS:

Since your first assignment will be to create your own portfolio, it is a good idea to see what other artists have done. Browse through the above links and choose your favorite portfolio (It doesn't have to be someone you know, just choose the one you feel has the best design, is most creative, etc.).

Choose TWO SITES you think shows great design. Copy the URLs and write a paragraph critiquing their design. Why is each one good?

Part 2: ARTSITE and IDEAS

"The emerging new order of art is that of interactivity, or "dispersed authorship." The canon is one of contingency and uncertaintyŠ The culturally dominate "objet d'art" as the sole focus... is replaced by the interface... The focus of the aesthetic shifts from the observed object to the participating subjectŠ "

Roy Ascott, "Is There Love in the Telematic Embrace?", Art Journal, 49:3 (Fall 1990)

It is important to know that there are independent artists out there creating interesting artistic websites (artsites) that push the limits in web technology and / or explore interesting new ideas.

LINKS TO NET ART SITES and EXHIBITIONS

Also explore the juried artsites found in these links to the SIGGRAPH 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998 Art Show artsites:

SIGGRAPH 2002 Art Gallery Artsites
SIGGRAPH 2001 Art Gallery Artsites
SIGGRAPH 2000 Art Gallery Artsites
SIGGRAPH 1999 Art Gallery Artsites
SIGGRAPH 1998 Art Gallery Artsites

Choose TWO artsites that you find most interesting CONCEPTUALLY. For each one, Write a paragraph that talks about the ideas behind the site. Why is it interesting? How does it engage the viewer? What ideas / thoughts does it provoke? In this final part you are concentrating on the concepts in lieu of the design, although a good design is what may have initially provoked your interest.

You must email in the typed assignment for a grade to helliot@bgnet.bgsu.edu
By the start of class on WEDNESDAY, January 21.
