Prerequisite: ARTC 321 or ART 392 (Digital Imaging)

Required Readings: Reading material will be handed out in class.

Suggested Readings: Any book that covers HTML, JavaScript, or Flash.

However, most of the HTML and JavaScript references needed can be found on the WWW.

Materials: You will need a ZIP disk, DVD-Ram disk, or CD-Roms to store your files. Due September 3.

Course Description and Objectives: This course will focus on interactive multimedia, specifically Internet ART and web design. Throughout the semester, we will be creating interactive multimedia art projects by focusing on the integration of interaction and non-linear structure in an art environment. Interactive multimedia is changing the way our culture navigates through and interprets visual as well as text-based information. Artists, as creators of visual information, now have many more possibilities available for structuring and presenting visual information. Hypermedia has opened the doors to the possibility of individualized artistic experiences for the viewer. In this regard, the viewer becomes an integral part of the art experience. Both multimedia and hypermedia invite collaboration among artists because of the interactive nature of the work. Since both multimedia and hypermedia involve the merging of media, we will be exploring a number of different computer graphics media including: bitmapped graphics, object based graphics, animation, digital video, digital audio, programming, and more. Throughout the course, we will be focusing on artistic and creative use of multimedia, therefore we will be conducting critiques and discussing the artistic aspect of the work. We will be using the Mac OSX workstation as our development tool in class, yet other platforms can be used for various assignments. The course will be divided into two components. The first half of the course will be devoted to HTML and JavaScript. The second portion of the course will focus on Macromedia Flash. Class lectures will include demonstrations, discussions, technical exploration, aesthetic inquiry, and historical information relevant to computer multimedia, hypermedia and telecommunications. Students are encouraged to pursue areas of interest and explore new ideas throughout the course.

Requirements: Each student is expected to complete all the assignments, required readings, midterm exam, and the final project. During discussion and lectures, students are expected to engage in meaningful classroom participation. Details of the various assignments will be discussed in class. Assignments missing on the scheduled critique day will be penalized one letter grade. No assignments will be accepted beyond one week from the due date.

Attendance: Read Carefully. Attendance is not only mandatory but it is crucial to your success in this class. If you are not in class please find out from the other students what was covered and if work was assigned. Absence is not a valid excuse for coming to the following class unprepared, or for not having an assignment completed that was given while you were gone. It is especially important to attend ALL critiques. If due to an emergency you are unable to attend a crit, please schedule an appointment with me upon your return. This class will adhere to the following Attendance Policy:

  1. You may miss a maximum of THREE classes without penalty.
  2. Missing more then 10% of regularly scheduled course meeting times (3 classes) results in the reduction of your final grade by one letter grade per absence beyond the third, and continues for each additional absence up to the 6th absence.
  3. Missing more then 20% of regularly scheduled course meetings (6 classes) results in automatic failure for the course. (Easy Formula: Number 7 = F).
  4. There are no "excused" or "unexcused" absences. There is only presence or absence.
  5. Arriving for class late or leaving class before dismissal constitutes a tardy. The accumulation of three tardies is equal to an absence in the calculation of attendance.
  6. In the event of a mental or physical health emergency or another similar crisis that may cause you to miss more than two classes, please set up an appointment with me to discuss your options.

Tardiness: Three arrivals of more than 15 minutes late = one (1) absence. Role will be taken at the beginning of each class. If you wander in late, it is your responsibility to make sure I mark your arrival.

Leaving Early: Do not leave class early. If you absolutely must, you have to clear it with me first, or you will be considered absent for that entire day.

Critiques: Attendance at FINAL CRITIQUE is mandatory. Absence from that, for any reason will lower your final grade by one letter.

During Critiques, I expect each student's full attention and respect. Computers are TURNED OFF during crits. Critiques begin promptly at class start time. The majority of your participation grade is evaluated from critique participation. Attendance and participation at Final Critique is mandatory.

Grading: Grades will be based on attendance, participation, assignments, research projects, and the final project. "A"s are only given for excellent projects that are turned in on time! "C"s are given for projects completed on time but average in quality and quantity. "F"s are substituted for missing assignments. Cumulative grades are calculated on the computer periodically throughout the course and distributed to the individual students.

Student Projects: Projects created in any Digital Arts course may be used by the ART department for the purpose of promoting the student, the department, and/or the university in general. These materials may also be used by the ART department for instructional purposes in future courses. Please inform the instructor if you do not want your projects used.

Midterm Exam: There will be a midterm exam where you will be required to create an HTML page. You will need to have memorized the tags.

Final Project: All students are expected to complete a final project which will be critiqued in class Wednesday, April 30. The final website should be completely functioning by this date. Not showing a completed final project at the Final Critique will severely effect your grade. A written proposal, hierarchical structure flowchart, and storyboard (complete with detailed drawings and written descriptions) will be presented before beginning work on your final piece.

Online Portfolio: All students will complete an online portfolio. Class assignments will assist in developing this portfolio. The Final portfolio should include links to all of the assignments, which must be updated by the final critique.

Student Concerns: Any student who wishes to discuss accommodations on the basis of a disability please come talk to me after class or during office hours.
