Project #1: Expanding Video: Installation / Performance

For your first project, you will create an expanded video installation. You may choose from small-scale projection-mapped objects (found or created), a multi-channel video (projected or on screens), or a performance. This video work must leave the cinematic / 2D realm and extend into the viewer's PHYSICAL space. This might be done using monitors in a sculptural installation, projection of video or stills onto sculptural surfaces, enveloping the viewer in a confrontational projection space, video used in a performance or event "happening", etc. You may also consider a site-specific installation.

A professional gallery exhibition that includes all of the successful installations will be installed in the Wankelman Gallery for Arts Xtravaganza on December 6. You may choose to collaborate, but the work should be more ambitious if working with a partner.

Artists working in film, video, and computer graphics have been using variations of projection techniques for aesthetic, conceptual, and technical purposes for over a century. Installation artists have been incorporating video into their installation art works for decades. Consider: How can projected images and video project meaning onto an object or space? How can projected imagery reveal or contrast the innate purpose of an object/space? What new effects and techniques can be used in the process?

Your Responsibilities
For this project, you will:  


PRELIMINARY WORK: (due Monday, Sept 8)

  1. Read the article, The Practice of Live Cinema, by Mia Makela: reading2.pdf (we will discuss it in class)
  2. Watch this TED talk, The Art of Projection Mapping, by John Ensor Parker: (15 minutes)
  3. Review this page: The Illusive World of Video Projection Mapping: Using Light & Sound To Manifest Imagination in the Physical Realm:

PROJECTION WORKSHOP: (on Monday, Sept 8)
Collect a minimum of TEN different “things” you want to experiment with as a projection surface. This could be fabrics, objects, different textures, etc. Search for an object or group of objects that you find could make an interesting projection surface. Consider the form / shape / surface of the object, as well as its function.. You may have something at home, but also considering searching the thrift shops and junk shops. You might even try dumpster diving!

What to look for: The object(s) must be portable: max of 5ft in any one direction (smaller / handheld objects are encouraged). Consider a series (stack / group) of objects if they are very small or their meaning changes (but you will need to glue/fasten them together). Depending on the surface of the object, you may need to paint it white, so don’t choose something valuable!

Optional: Bring in some source video you want to try projecting. If you bring your laptop, you can hook it up to a projector. Otherwise we will have some found footage content available.

On Monday, September 8th, we will hold a projection workshop in room 1014 Fine Art Center (meet there at 2:30). Bring in your items and footage, and we will experiment with projection so that you better understand how light reacts with various sources.


CONCEPT PROPOSAL: (Due Wednesday, September 10)

Concept statement: Write a short paragraph for EACH of these points to develop the concept for your video installation.

  1. Clearly state your overall concept / theme for your artwork (what does it say?)
  2. What TYPE of video installation is it? Is it multi-channel, projected, performance and WHY is it best suited for that media? If you are projecting onto a surface, why did you choose that object/space?
    1. How does the projection relate to the object / surface? (support it, contrast it, etc.)
  3. What type of footage you will use: Is it animated / live action, shot, created, or found? Include details about the sound, editing, timing, and text
    1. Is the video / animation narrative or non-narrative? How?
  4. Where you will install / perform the piece and why you chose that space (if not the gallery)
    1. If it is a one-time performance or happening, WHEN you intend to have it
  5. Is there sound or silence? If there is sound, what type (dialogue, effects, music?)
  6. What is your intention for the piece (what you want the audience to think about with the piece & how they will interact or experience the piece)?
  7. Create an EQUIPMENT LIST - what you need and if you can provide it (include accessories, a source, etc.)
  8. If collaborating: what role will each collaborator have in the piece (who does what)? Why is this best suited as a collaborative vs. solo work?

Notes: The projected video should loop (could fade in/out), and should be short (about 30-seconds to 3-minutes).


DIAGRAM AND STORYBOARD: (Due Monday, September 15)
1) Create a detailed Installation Diagram - This floorplan must represents the space and all of the equipment you will be using. (displays, source, speakers, cables, etc.) Include electrical sources and clearly label all elements. Draw it to scale and Include measurements on the diagram. You can also choose to create it in Photoshop or Maya, or use graph paper. You should have at least two viewpoints (i.e. top and side orthographic views).

2) Create a Storyboard - Create a storyboard that shows the plan for the video. Be sure to fill in all of the shot information including duration, sound, etc. Every camera / shot change should be a new storyboard frame, so there is not a specific quantity requirement, but make it thorough, clean, and readable. Use the templates below, or a similar one that you designed.

All footage must be shot, digitized, and rough edited by this class.



INSTALL YOUR ARTWORK: (Due Monday, September 2) Revised: DUE MONDAY, OCTOBER6
Have your video content edited and rendered so that it will loop. We will install in room 1104 Fine Arts Center. We will hold a critique, Your work will be graded on:

  1. Effective realization of concept
  2. Craftsmanship and attention to detail
  3. Technical skill
  4. Appropriateness and professionalism of video


DOCUMENT YOUR ARTWORK: (Due Wednesday, October 1) Revised: DUE WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8.
One of the problematic things with installation work is that you have to experience it… or document it well enough for others to understand the piece. Video is ideal since the work is time-based. Shoot documentation video of your artwork and edit it in a way that best describes the experience with the piece. Watch your aperture, color balance. Use a tripod. Vary your shots (LS, MS, CU). Include cuts to the original source footage if desired. Video should be short, may include text to contextualize the experience.

It is also highly suggested that you take High-resolution digital still images of the piece (extra credit).

All items are graded on meeting the due date, level of completion, conceptual clarity, and technical skill.
