Research Assignment #1:
Good Design and Artistic Concepts on the World Wide Web
DUE: TUESDAY, September 3
Email Me the completed assignment prior to start of class.
MUST BE TYPED, PROFESSIONALLY WRITTEN, EDITED, SPELL / GRAMMAR CHECKED, ETC.
This assignment is in THREE parts. You must complete all three.
Search the World Wide Web for sites with great design and a good user interface. Keep in mind that the content is NOT important! What is important is DESIGN. Consider the layout (color, composition, readability, etc.) and the interface (Is it intuitive?).
Copy the URL and write a paragraph critiquing the design. Why is it good? What makes it user friendly?
(hint: Don't go to the Nintendo site and say its cool because it has all the latest games and cheat sheets and you like Nintendo... That's NOT a critique!)

Since your first assignment will be to create your own portfolio, it is a good idea to see what other students have done. Browse through the above links and choose your favorite portfolio (It doesn't have to be your best friend... in fact, do NOT be concerned with whose it is... just choose the one you feel has the best design, is most creative, etc.).
Copy the URL and write a paragraph critiquing the design. Why is it good?
It is important to know that there are independent artists out there creating interesting artistic websites (artsites) that push the limits in web technology and / or explore interesting new ideas.
Check out these links to the SIGGRAPH 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998 Art Show artsites:SIGGRAPH 2002 Art Gallery Artsites
Choose the artsite that you find most interesting CONCEPTUALLY. Write a paragraph that talks about the ideas behind the site. Why is it interesting? How does it engage the viewer? What ideas / thoughts does it provoke? In this final part you are concentrating on the concepts in lieu of the design, although a good design is what may have initially provoked your interest.
You must email in the typed assignment for a grade to email@example.com
