Note, I will not collect the CD for this assignment, however I expect that your will create one for your own records as you did in the last assignment.

Summary

Create 5-8images, four prints (one of which you will make), and one contact sheet
In this assignment you will use advanced cameras and digital manipulation (if you want) to make a body of work that is a fabrication and plays with the idea of photographic truth.

Reading 3
The Reconfigured Eye, Visual Truth in the Post-Photographic Era, William J. Mitchell, MIT Press, 1992.
Chapter 3 - Intention and Artifice

Objectives

To learn the technical idiosyncrasies of advanced photography.
To grasp the nature of image making with high end digital cameras.
To continue the process of understanding good digital prints.
To make a digital print on a large format printer.
To analyze and make artistic comments on photographic truth.

Methodology

Use a high end digital camera and Photoshop to fabricate an environment, situation, or object. Think about the truth or the lack thereof that the camera portrays and make a seamless image that forces us to confront the truth of images. You can construct the pictures when you take the photograph, you can manipulate them in Photoshop, or you can use combination of both. The content can be very broad, so long as you are fabricating and playing with the notion of truth.

With the digital revolution we can take quick photographs and get fast feedback, thus image making is less rigid and objective and now more flexible and subjective. How we make the image is now less important than what the image is about.

For yourself, Create a backup CD with a file structure and reference contact sheets as you did in your first assignment. I will not collect this, it is for your own reference.

Constraints

You will create a contact sheet from the images that you shot for this assignment.

Try to make a cohesive body of work that is five to eight images that go together in some way.

Print your four best images using the resources in room 202. You will print one of the images yourself using a printer in room 202.

Submission Requirements

Create a folder with your last name on it in the Assignment 3 folder:
Classes->ARTC400_2->Assignment 3-> Your Name

Put your contact sheet in this folder.

Put all five to eight images in this folder.
Images should be 5MB or smaller (turn-in version only) and be tiff or jpeg.

Bring prints to class on March 19th, including the one you made yourself. You will be making the one yourself from March 5th up until the 19th. I suggest you make your own print sooner rather than later.

Grading

You will be graded on your ability to complete all parts of the assignment.

You will be graded on concept, formal qualities (composition, color, etc.), and technical mastery.

This assignment will be averaged with equal weight to the other assignments except the final, which will have a weight of 3.

Please note

Ask any questions in class or contact me by email or stop by office hours to clarify any questions you have about the assignment.
