Summary

You will create a body of work for display in Second Life. To that end, you will make an avatar so you can learn about Second Life; the culture, communication, navigation, exploration, and ultimately exhibition opportunities.

Objectives

To create images with the intention of display in Second Life.
To learn how to create an avatar, navagate, explore, and engage in Second Life culture.
To learn how to display work in Second Life.
To analyze the viablitly and future of showing and selling art in Second LIfe.
To determine the use of Second Life in relation to your imaging.


Methodology

PART I
Go to Second Life to create an account and avatar.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR READING THE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES when you make an avatar. You cannot proceed with the assignment until you read this. BGSU, the instructor, and the school are not accountable for your actions.

Install SL per instructions in class
Visit Orientation Island
Enhance you avatar
Become familiar with SL (move, buy, change avatar, play, visit places)
Find other art (images in gallery, things, openings, events) and report about it (include the location).

Create a document with the following information:
User name, where you visited, what you found (include location of galleries), what you experienced, report on the art you found (include the location), report on what kind of art is appropriate for this venue.

Create a file that is a screen shot of your avatar

PART II
Make 5 images, choices:
1) Make work that is a reaction to your second life experience in any way.
2) Make work that you feel works best aesthetically in second life.
3) Make work that is influenced by other artwork that you found in second life.
4) Make work that is an extension of something you have already started.

This means you will need to do a lot of exploration in Second Life before you will know what to make. You may include screen shots taken in second life.

PART III
Install your work in the private sandbox for critique. Details, including making an object for display and transferring images, will be covered in class.

Consider your images separatley or as a group. How would you like them displayed?

Optionally, you can create an alternative display for your work.

We will critique your work and choose none, some, or all of it for display on the BGSU Island.

PART IV
Install successful work in a public area of the BGSU island Invite the SL world for an public critique

PART V
Analysis
Write (TYPE) about your SL experience. Include at least the following information:

Explain why you liked or did not like your SL experience.
Will you continue to use SL, why or why not?
What is the potential for your imaging work in SL?
What is the potential for any of your other work in SL?
What, is your opinion, is the future for SL or other communities like it?



Constraints

PART I
Name your avatar in the following way:
First Name: your first and last name (no space)
Last Name: Choose from list
Go through orientation Isand, then do a search on Bowling Green State and set it as home.
Explore the BGSU island, then the rest of Second Life

PART II
Images should be jpeg. You will create a high resolution versions of the images that you will keep. You will create a low resolution image (no more than 640X480, 72 DPI) that you will post in SL.

PART III
Create an object or objects in the BGSU sandbox for your work. Transfer all 5 images in preparation for our private critique.

PART IV
We will determine if some or all of your work is ready for public display. We will then have a BGSU island administrator place our work in a public space.

OPTIONAL: You create your unique display and it is transfered, as is, to a public place.

PART V

Submission Requirements

PART I
Create a folder with your last name on it in the Assignment 1 folder:
Classes->ARTC423_1->Assignment 1-> Your Name

Put your document and the screen shot of your avatar this folder.

PART II
Put images in your assigment one folder. Name them: lastnameSL1.jpg (etc., up to 5)

PART III
Install work in private space SL.

PART IV
Move your work to the designated public space on the BGSU island.

Invite the world to our critique.

PART V
Turn in a digital copy to your assignment 1 folder AND turn in a hard copy at the start of class.


Grading

You will be graded on your ability to complete all parts of the assignment.

You will be graded on concept, formal qualities (composition, color, etc.), and technical mastery.

This assignment will be averaged with equal weight to the other assignments except the final, which will have a weight of 3.
