Create 5 images, four prints, backup CD with file structure, and one contact sheet
In this assignment you will use a film-based camera to grasp the basics of photography and to use straight photography in a painterly way. You will shoot film, scan images, and perform only basic manipulations to some of the scanned imagery. You will also learn the basics of Bridge to create a contact sheet and organize your images.

To learn the basics of photography
To learn how straight film can be painterly
To optionally mimic painterly functions digitally
To learn how to create a digital contact sheet and organize your work with Bridge
To start the process of understanding good digital prints

Use a film based camera to shoot at least one 35mm roll of film, 24 images or more. The film can be color or black and white. It is best to use an SLR, but if you do not have access to one, you may use a throw away camera. Your goal will be to manipulate the film as much as you can when you shoot it to make it seem painterly. Use lighting, blur (shutter speed), grain, depth of field, and color, among other things, to do this. Review the artists covered in class:
Paul Strand
Edward Steichen
Loretta Lux
Imogen Cunningham

Create a contact sheet (full sheet and CD size) using Bridge as covered in class.

Create a backup CD
This CD is not only a backup, but it shows me you have followed the organizational structure that you should use for each project.
Overall structure should be
Series Name -> SeriesNameDateOrig
Series Name -> SeriesNameDateFinal
Series Name -> SeriesNameDateInProgress

NOTE: Create 2 small contact sheets for CD using Bridge as covered in class. One contact sheet will be of orginals and one will be the final images.

You will create a contact sheet from the entire roll of film, a backup CD organized per instructions in class, and make five final images.

At least TWO of the images have to be straight, that is no digital manipulation besides basic functions. The rest can be digitally manipulated if you want.

Print your four best images using the CAT lab or the resources in room 202. NOTE: No journal sketches required for this assignment, but I suggest using it for your own benefit

Submission Requirements

Create a folder with your last name on it in the Assignment 1 folder:
Classes->ARTC400_2->Assignment 1-> Your Name

Put your contact sheet in this folder.

Put all five images in this folder.
Images should be 5MB or smaller (turn-in version only) and be tiff or jpeg.

Bring prints to class on the 24th.

Bring CDs (with cover) to class on the 24th.

You will be graded on your ability to complete all parts of the assignment.

You will be graded on concept, formal qualities (composition, color, etc.), and technical mastery.

This assignment will be averaged with equal weight to the other assignments except the final, which will have a weight of 3.

Please note

Ask any questions in class or contact me by email or stop by office hours to clarify any questions you have about the assignment.
