 Phanasmagoria, a traveling show using Magic Lanterns opened in New York

 Peter Mark Roget published Persistence of Vision which investigated the illusion of motion.

 The Thaumatrope was developed by John Ayrton in Paris. It is a disk with an image on both sides and is held by two strings on either side. When spun, it creates visually combines the two images on either side of the disc.
