This course will focus on advanced ActionScript programming and the creation of interactive online experiences. The content of the course includes interactive art, nonlinear narrative and gaming concepts. The course is highly technical and explores methods of controlling, manipulating and obtaining user input and responding to that input to create meaningful experiences. Throughout the course, students will focus on artistic and creative exploration of ideas and interaction. The concept MUST come first then develop the technology to successfully convey the idea. The class will be using a variety of technologies as development tools, such as Flash, Photoshop, SoundBooth, and Maya. Since multimedia involves the merging of media, the course will explore a number of different computer graphics media including: bitmapped graphics, vector-based graphics, 2D or 3D animation, digital video, digital audio, programming and more. Students are expected to build upon the knowledge obtained in the Intermediate Interactive class.
Class lectures will include demonstrations, discussions, technical exploration, aesthetic inquiry and historical information relevant to computer multimedia, hypermedia and telecommunications. Students are encouraged to pursue areas of interest and explore new ideas throughout the course.
Digital storage: Firewire External Drive (formatted for both Mac and PC), DVD-R/DVD+R or large Flash Drive.
You will be expected to back up your data a minimum of once a week.
The course fee for this course covers the cost of the following materials: software, peripherals, class storage media, and guest speakers. Other materials such as personal storage media are to be purchased by the student. The cost for harddrivesand Flash drives vary based on the needs/wants of the individual student.
Recommended Texts (not required)
We are using Flash CS4 ActionScripting 3.0 so it is IMPORTANT to get the most recent reference book that focuses on ActionScript 3.0 NOT Flash in general. We will learn the Flash interface in class but you will need a good reference for the Actionscript programming language. The following books are good reference:.

Each student is expected to complete all projects, exercises, in-class exercises, the required readings,
and the final project.
Details of the various assignments will be discussed in class.
During class time, students are expected to engage in meaningful classroom participation.
Attendance is mandatory. We will be covering a lot of material this semester and each lecture will be building upon the previous lecture. If missed, lectures will not be repeated. If you do have an excused
absence, it is your responsibility meet with a classmate or make an appointment with me to get the information. Most often the information you need is posted on the website but always check to make sure additional information was presented.
1 absences = no penalty
2 absences = overall final grade lowered 1 letter grade
3 absences = overall final grade lowered 2 letter grades
4 absences = fail the course; dropping the course strongly recommended.
Being 15 minutes or more late to class three times will count as one unexcused absence.
Assignments and Critiques
Turning in Projects
Projects are due in the Homework folder prior to the beginning of class.
Revised projects are due the next class period after the critique due date unless the assignment is due on Monday, then the revised project is due the following Monday.
I do not accept late revised projects and you will receive a zero on the revised project if it is NOT turned in on time.
If you miss a regular critique, the project for that critique will receive an F for the critique grade. Critique grades are based on the amount of progress not quality or content.
During critiques, I expect each student's full attention and respect. Monitors will be TURNED
OFF during critiques. Critiques begin promptly at the beginning of the class.
Attendance at the Final critique is mandatory. Missing the final critique will result in an F for
the Final Project. NO late Final Projects will be accepted!

A = Excellent - Above and beyond, artistically AND technically
B = Very Good - Beyond requirements, artistically OR technically
C = Average - Met the basic requirements
D = Did not meet requirements
F = Project not turned in or completely insufficient
Digital Arts Department Rules
• No food or drink in the lab.
• No cell phones, or beepers on during class. ALWAYS remember to turn off your cellphone before class.
• No sleeping during class.
• No using head/ear phones, chatting online, emailing, my space/facebook/ or other online surfing during class.
• No playing video games during the class time.
• Hardware: No student is permitted to disconnect, reconnect, or reconfigure any workstation without the permission of a digital arts instructor.
Any problems with hardware or software must be reported to a digital arts professor, preferably by email.
Report should include ID number of the workstation and exact nature of problem.
If you do not obey the rules, you will receive a first warning. If it happens again, you will be asked to leave the classroom plus receive one half a letter grade drop and a third time you will receive a full letter grade drop on your final grade.
Projects created in any Digital Arts course may be used by the ART department for the purpose of promoting the student,
the department and/or the university in general. These materials may also be used by the ART department for instructional
purposes in future courses. Please inform the instructor if you do not want your projects used.
Any student who wishes to discuss accommodations on the basis of a disability, please come talk to me after class or during
