1950 - 1959 Baby Boom and TV Cartoons


The Baby Boom
Right after the Second World War, many soldiers had a desire to return home and start families. This created a serge in the infant population during the 1950's.

New Roles for Women
During the 1950's with having how returned, women were urged to resume their roles in the home and quit the jobs they had aquired during th war. This was not taken well by many, and soon new roles for both genders would be put into works.

Disney premiers Cinderella, on February 15, a classic fairy tale about kind and beloved daughter who dreams of something more than what her cruel stepmother and evil stepsisters have given her.

October 2, Peanuts, drawn by Charles M. Schulz is first published in seven U.S Newspaper.

This site talks about the reusing of cartoon footage. This technique was used frequently in the 1950's to save time and money.

    Computer Animation, Saxenian, United States, MIT
    Some say this was the first computer animation. It was of a bouncing ball.

    There are now about 15 million TV sets in the Untied States, and color TV is also introduced at this time.

    On July 28, Disney premiers Alice in Wonderland, a story about a girl, Alice, who is bored by her history lessons and wishes to escape to a world of wild fantasy.

    On May 29, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay make the first ascent to the summit of Mt. Everest

    On December 30 color television goes on sale in the United States for a price of $1,175 (Not adjusted for inflation).


    Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are executed for their part in World War II espionage.

    This is the first animation to introduce the charater Gumby to the public.

    February 5, 1953 Disney premiers Peter Pan which is a story about a boy who wishes never to grow up. The lost boys and the four Darling children also get caught up in the fight against the sinister Captain Hook.

    First nuclear warhead missile tested

    Le village enchante (The Enchanted Village), produced by Marcel and Real Raciot, is first Canadian animated feature.

    Bert and Harry The animated characters Bert and Harry, promotion of Piel's Beer, sends a strong message of the power of animation in the advertising industry.

    Felix the Cat, Otto Mesmer, United States
    In the mid-1950's older episodes of Felix were reintroduced as a television show for children.


    FORTRAN - a computer language, was developed, which in turn permitted designers to utilize the graphic capabilities of the computer.

    Hanna-Barbera Hanna-Barbera is formed.

    The Association Internationale du Film d'Animation (ASIFA) is founded in France.

    Knighty Knight Bugs

    Warner Bros. releases Knighty Knight Bugs, produced by Friz Freleng, which wins the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film

    Chairy Tale

    Chairy Tale by Norman Mclaren is released and wins Academy Award

    Disney adapts a Xerox process to its animation, which allows the transfer of pencil drawings directly to cels.

    Charlie Brown & Lucy appear in animated form.

    Yogi Bear & Boo Boo debut on The Huckleberry Hound Show

    Sleeping Beauty

    Disney's Sleeping Beauty Nominated for Oscar.
