Karen Sullivan's Rules of StoryTelling:

  • We Break the Suspension of Disbelief if story is not something YOU, the writer, know about first-hand
  • Story about mastering the art, not second guessing the marketplace
  • Story about originality, not duplication
  • Story about archetypes, not stereotypes
  • Use time-worn themes, recognizable roles, hero, victim, evil, good mother, etc.
  • Story is about audience, respect who they are.
  • Story is about moving audience, not objects.
  • look for thoroughness, not shortcuts

    7 Sentence Stories:
    1. Exposition or Introduction: Establishing Shot
    2. Inciting Moment
    3. First Conflict: Establish story question
    4. Second Conflict: raise attention
    5. Climax
    6. Answer the story question
    7. Resolution

    Story Ideas:Three Types of Conflict
    1. Character against Self
    2. Character against another character
    3. Character against environment or situation

    Audience in 1 of 4 Places during story
    1. Mystery-Audience knows less.
    2. Suspense-Audience learns as character learns
    3. Drama-Audience knows more than characters
    (This is hardest because audience knows ending
    4. Irony or surprise or humor
    Audience thinks they know, but there is a twist

    Possible Story Endings
  • Final and absolute
  • Cliff Hanger
  • Shock and Awe
  • Tear Jerker
  • Call to Action
  • Twist and Irony
  • Revelation, Educated, Persuaded, or Informed

    One Minute Story Feasibility:
  • No more that 2 characters
  • Maximum Two Locations
  • Maximum three conflicts
  • Be aware of potential problems like fur, water, refractions, particles
  • Plan Your Animation!!!!

    Rules of Character Development:
  • Essence of Animation: "To make the invisible visible"
  • In terms of character, what you can show that is invisible is the psychological profile
  • Invisible aspects of character: spiritual, psychological, social
  • Apply the psychological profile of the character to her physical attributes
  • Thought and emotion drive gesture and action
  • The Visual design of the character should express the character's psychological profile
