Prerequisites: ARTC 321 Digital Imaging and ARTC 331 Interactive Multimedia

Reading: Reading material will be handed out in class.

Suggested Reading: Any book that covers Macromedia Director and Lingo. The Visual Quickstart Guides are inexpensive and very good and there is one available for Director if you are having trouble with the basic interface in Director. The most useful type of book will be one with a good Lingo reference and examples.

Materials: Materials: You will need a CD-Rs or some other removeable storage disk such as Zips to store your files. You can save your files over the network to the Media100 DVDRAM drives or the MacG4 DVD-Rs. You also need at least one Hi8 video tape ($10-$12) or a DV tape. At the end of the semester you will also need to purchase CD-Rs for your interactive Macromedia Director portfolio and final project. These cost less than $1.00 a piece. You may also need to purchase electronic sensors and other materials for your installation works later in the semester.

Course Description and Objectives: This course will focus on interactive multimedia, which includes CD-ROM and Installation art. Throughout the semester, we will be creating interactive multimedia art projects by focusing on integration of interaction and non-linear structures in an art environment. Multimedia has opened the doors to the possibility of individualizing artistic experiences for the viewer. The viewer becomes an integral part of the art experience by determining the outcome of the work. As the course progresses we will explore alternative ways for the user to interact with the art. The course will also explore the incorporation video and QTVR in an interactive environment. Throughout the course, we will be focusing on artistic and creative exploration of ideas. The concept MUST come first then develop the technology to successfully convey your idea. We will be using Macromedia Director and various types of computers as our development tools along with circuit boards and electronic devices designed to allow input and output of information. Since multimedia involves the merging of media, we will be exploring a number of different computer graphics media including: bitmapped graphics, vector-based graphics, animation, digital video, digital audio, programming, and more. The course will be divided into 2 components. The first part of the course will be devoted to multimedia authoring in Macromedia Director. The second portion of the course will focus on electronic installation art. Class lectures will include demonstrations, discussions, CD presentations, technical exploration, aesthetic inquiry, and historical information relevant to multimedia and installation art. Students are encouraged to pursue areas of interest and explore new ideas throughout the course.

Requirements: Each student is expected to complete all the assignments, the required readings, the storyboards, and the final project. During discussion and lectures, students are expected to engage in meaningful classroom participation. Details of the various assignments will be discussed in class. Assignments missing the scheduled review will be penalized one letter grade. No assignments will be accepted beyond one week from the due date.

Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Because class critiques and discussion cannot be made up after class, all absences, whether excused or not excused will effect your grade. Unexcused absences will not be tolerated and will effect your grade based on the attendance formula:

1 absence = no penalty
2 absences = grade lowered one grade value
3 absences = grade lowered two grade value
4 absences = grade lowered three grade values
5 absences = fail the course
Excused absences
(accompanied by a doctors note)
4 or more = recommend dropping the course
Being late to class three time will count as one unexcused absence. Students are also expected to utilize studio time and will be counted absent or tardy if they leave class early unless approved by the instructor.


Grading: Grades will be based on attendance, participation, assignments, research projects, storyboard and the final project. "A"s are only given for excellent projects that are turned in on time! "C"s are given for projects completed on time but average in quality and quantity. "F"s are substituted in for missing assignments. Cumulative grades are calculated on the computer periodically throughout the course and distributed to the individual student.

Student Projects: Projects created in any Computer Art course may be used by the ART department for the purpose of promoting the student, the department, and/or the university in general. These materials may also be used by the ART department for instructional purposes in future courses. Please inform the instructor if you do not want your projects used.

Final Project: All students are expected to complete a final project which will be shown at the final critique. The final multimedia art piece should be completely functioning and/or constructed by the due date. Not showing a completed final project at the Final Critique will result in your final grade being lowered by one full grade after the F for the project has been factored in. A storyboard and written proposal, complete with detailed drawings and written descriptions as well as the structure of the piece will be presented before beginning the project.

Multimedia Portfolio: All students will complete a multimedia portfolio and press it on CD. The CD cover should be creatively designed. Class assignments will focus on the development of this portfolio. Final portfolio CDs should include all projects and the documentation and/or code of the installations and final project and will be due Monday May 6th.
