Brief

Create a portfolio website using (X)HTML and CSS - showcasing your work as a student - with a minimum of four content areas


Objectives

To develop technical skills in (X)HTML and CSS and to learn and utilize interactive design techniques incoroportating human-centered design principles. To gain experience in planning for a website.


Methodology

Develop the Project following these steps:

Research
Look at examples of portfolio sites and / or find other examples on your own - pick three sites, at a minimum - go through the sites completely and write about what you find in your BLOG / Journal - be prepared to discuss in class - what do you like or dislike about the sites that you research ? From what you have learned from the assigned readings and class lectures, how do these sites incorporate human-centered design principles or not ? How do these sites use principles of graphic design and information design to achieve an effective interactive design ?

Plan
Create a Content Outline, Flow Chart, Site Map and Schematics to organize and plan your website design

For planning content: include best work from Digital Arts classes including: ARTC 201, ARTC 311, ARTC 312, ARTC 321 - also plan designs with projects from this class in mind - which will be created later - Projects Two, Three, and Four - although you do not have the media from these projects to incorporate at this point - you will have enough information on the general characteristics of the projects - to keep your design flexible - create placeholders - to allow for adding them during the final week of the semester.

Create Content
Develop digital assets for incorporation into website design

Design
Translate planning documents into functional website using (X)HTML and CSS

Functional First Version
Present functional website to class for critique

Revise
With feedback from critique, revise website

Final Version
Turn in completed website for grading

Revised Final Version
During the final week of the semester - incorporate media assets from projets 2, 3, and 4 to update portfolio website - turn in


Constraints

No WYSIWYG (Whay You See is What You Get - i.e. - Dreamweaver, FrontPage etc.) software editors - all pages are to be created by hand coding using BBEdit.



Submission Requirements

BLOG / Journal

When you have a BLOG / Journal entry due - you must email me - fleight@bgnet.bgsu.eduto let me know that there is a BLOG update to read.

Planning Documents

Planning Documents can be created digitally using Photoshop, Illustrator or other similar programs and posted to your BLOG and/or printed - if they are executed by hand - place them in a sketchbook or other paper format and keep them together in a folder - if they are created on paper - the version that you show to me must be clear / legible.

Website Designs

Create your initial designs in Photoshop, Illustrator, or Fireworks - use layers and grouping tools to organize visual designs - layers are recommended - if you flatten your file to show in class - keep the layered version - design is fluid - it can change and using layers will make it easier to update your design without having to recreate the design document.

First Version of Site for Critique

All webpages and associated digital assets (files) must be contained in one organized folder (for example - image files in an IMAGES folder - we will go over standard file orgainziation methods in class before this stage of the proejct is due) - the main (x)html page must be title 'index.html'

Final Version for Grading

Same as above - orgainze the files in one folder and place them on the server in the location specified by instructor.



Grading

You will be graded on your ability to complete the assignment and meet all deadlines associated with the project.

You will be graded on organization, planning, technical and creative aspects of your project.

This project will be worth 20% of your final grade.
